The Lake District, England

Updated: Feb 13, 2022

THE BEST BITS

Every year it is tradition for me and my family to spend a week in The Lakes. We book a cosy cottage just a mile out of Ambleside town and enjoy a peaceful and relaxing trip away. I recommend that anybody who is looking for an escape from the real world takes a deep breathe and explores the natural beauty England has to offer in the Lake District.

There are numerous reasons we choose Ambleside every time, but the most enticing thing every year is, without a doubt, the food. It goes without saying the quality of local produce makes every meal a treat, so here is a few of the places I'd recommend if I had to choose!

Ambleside restaurants - my top picks

Ziffilinis (vegetarian) - YUM. I will be the first to admit that my family are big meat eaters, so the first time we visited Ziffilinis (for my mum's dinner choice) we were a bit worried about how the menu was going to appeal to us. A couple hours later and I can tell you there were definitely no worries. Pizza ,pudding ,music ,great atmosphere and all around a great place to eat.

Dodds - A quaint little Italian place perfect for a family dinner or a cosy date night. The food is to die for, another successful 3 course meal down and a few too many drinks! It's a fairly small restaurant with no more than15 tables inside so i'd definitely recommend getting there for dinner opening time. But what's not to love about an early dinner then a few rounds up the pub after ;)

Sheilas Cottage - Warm. Cosy. Friendly. My only negative is that it's based on top of a rather steep slope, but other than that, it's lovely. I'd have to say lamb shank and fudge cake is the usual order but with an ever changing menu there's so much to choose from.

The White Lion - If a casual bit of pub grub is what you're after, then the 'White Lion' is a go to. Always busy with families, games and laughter, you can't go far wrong.

Last but not least

The Walnut fish and chip bar- Battered sausage, chips and gravy! Sometimes there's nothing better than sitting with a chip batch on a bench with the family and just taking in the scenery. Plonked on a wall with people playing mini golf and tennis around you and the most beautiful view of Wansfell infant. It's unbeatable.

Obviously there are so many other places that are well worth the visit, Ambleside Inn, White Lion and The Golden Rule are perfect for family evenings after dinner. Personally, me and my family play cards, 5 card whizz and Rummy. Absolute classics.

Now let's talk about walks

Words will not be able to do the views and the scenery justice in the slightest so I am going to let the pictures do the speaking for me!

My go to choice is always Easedale Tarn in Grasmere. Rising to only 1000ft...ish. It's a lovely walk up along side the waterfalls with plants and places to stop and rest. At the top you're faced with a tarn and a little crossing to come down the opposite side. From someone who is not fit in the slightest, it's a worth while walk.

I'm not going to go into detail about all the walks we have done because 1. I'd be here all day and 2. I definitely can not remember the names of them all!

So, here's a summarised list of walks I can remember and do recommend:

  • Alcock Tarn - Grasmere

  • Nab Scar - Ambleside

  • Loughrrigg Fell - Ambleside

  • Helvellyn - Thirlmere

  • Wansfell - Ambleside

  • Red Screes - Ambleside

  • Sweden Bridge - Ambleside via Kirkstone Pass

  • Silver How - Grasmere
