Exploring Prague: The Ultimate Guide To Making The Most Of Your Break

Updated: May 2

Start as you mean to go on... so what better way is there to break in a new year than with a trip across the sea to the Czech Republic! As weekends abroad are becoming increasingly popular, Prague is a must-do... sooner rather than later too.

Known for its culture, history and of course beer, you can explore everything from architectural brilliance to numerous Irish bars, the city has something to suit everyone. With that said, as Prague makes a popular name for itself, so does its attractions, and with that comes queues. So you best jump on a plane quick!

Where to stay...

After an exceedingly long journey from Luton to Prague, we were more than happy to arrive at our hotel, where we were greeted with a glass of prosecco each and a free room upgrade. After several delays, we didn't end up arriving at our hotel until gone midnight, so this warm welcome was definitely the positive start to our weekend that we needed.

The Michelangelo Grand Hotel is a 5 star establishment that sits comfortably between the Old Town and New Town, and a stones throw from a shopping centre. After spending three nights in one of their deluxe suits, I think it's fair to say it lives up to its reputation. The hotel offers an inclusive breakfast, consisting of a range of hot and continental, as well as cakes for those with a sweet tooth. The staff were on hand and helpful on all accounts of our stay, and the most important part, the bed was beyond comfortable.

If you are looking for a guaranteed quality stay in a prime location, look no further than this hotel.

Must Do's...

Prague Castle

Located across Charles Bridge, Prague Castle is true monument to Prague's past, with several museums holding key information to events dating back over 1000 years. This UNESCO site offers tours to the public like never before, with immersive opportunities to uncover the Saint Vitus Cathedral, the royal crypt, Saint Wenceslas Chapel and so many other landmarks.

For around £5 per person (my maths may be a little off!), you can climb over 200 steps to the top of the cathedral, where you will be able to see the infamous bell up close, as well as panoramic views over the city.

Narrow Alley

The narrowest street in Prague is just 70cm wide, with traffic lights operating its flow on either end. Based a few minutes from the castle, the alley is tucked away between two streets, concealed with a 'standard' looking gate. The street is definitely worth a visit to say you've done it, though unfortunately for visitors it is currently temporarily closed.

Dancing House

Inspired by the famous dancing duo, Fred Astaire and his partner Ginger Rogers, the Dancing House presents one of the most unique buildings in the world. With a gallery and a restaurant with a terrace offering 360 degree views of the city, it is the perfect combination of history and modernity.

For when you can't decide between an Irish pub or touristy things...

Beer Spa

Weather your drawn by the unique concept of bathing in a beer bath, or tempted by poring your own limitless pints, a beer spa is an experience you have to try! With only a few locations offering this twist to a classic 'spa', book your slot before you go to make sure you don't miss out!

For those of you that need a little more convincing, let me paint a picture. You will have a private room to yourself and up to three others who you may choose to book your session with, in the room you'll find an old-fashioned style hot tub, that will be filled with a combination of beer and vitamins, as well as two beer taps, a hay bed and a bathroom/ shower. Whether its a romantic start to your day, or a fun experiment with friends, the beer spa is truly worth every penny.

After endless exploring throughout the day, the nightlife opportunities follow closely. With an array of bars and restaurants, ranging from traditional cuisine to lively clubs, you won't be short for choice for where to eat.

My top 5 recommendations to try during your stay

1 . Railway Restaurant - It only takes a 5 minute scroll on TikTok to find this one of a kind dining experience. Get your food and drink delivered to you via train in this rustic restaurant, but with ever growing popularity, be sure to book a table to save you waiting!

2. Restaurant U Prince - For a mix of cuisine options, indulge in a meal at this cosy restaurant. After enjoying a steak and a traditional platter board, followed by an Oreo sundae, the outdoor seating also provides the perfect location to people watch.

3. Ristorante Italiano Bushchetto - You can't go wrong with an Italian for dinner no matter where you are, and this restaurant offers the creamiest carbonara, not to mention the fruity cocktails to accompany it.

4. Durty Nellys Irish Pub - There certainly isn't a shortage of Irish bars around Prague, and after visiting a fair few of them, this is definitely my fav. With a lively atmosphere, sports tv's and quick service, it would be rude not to indulge in a pint or five!

5. Bar Slavia - This riverside cafe gives an old-timey feel. If you're looking for somewhere to grab a coffee and a cake this is 100 percent worth a visit, and you'll find it a stones throw from the dancing house - 2 birds 1 stone.

After having the pleasure of spending a long weekend in the city, I look forward to my next visit. A city that is thriving with so much to do but still provides that feeling of being safe is certainly not one to knock. Prague is set to become one of the most popular city breaks in Europe, and with that hidden gems will become main stream, make sure you get your visit in soon. Immerse yourself in the charm of local traditions and quaint streets to truly experience the best Prague has on offer.
