48 hours in Amsterdam

Updated: May 2

A city with something for everyone, Amsterdam deserves much longer than just 2 days, but if that's all you have then here's your guide to making the most of it!

YOUR FLIGHTS

It may go without saying, but if you're looking at spending two nights in Amsterdam then early flights are key! Personally, I always go for an 8am, not too early that you'll be tired all day but early enough for you to be in the heart of the city in time for brunch.

Once you have made the journey from Schipol Airport to central station, my biggest tip is to head straight to the locker station. Starting from €7 for a standard size bag and working up to €11 for a larger locker big enough for 2 cabin cases, you can leave your luggage securely within the station and go about seeing the city before check-in at your hotel.

USEFUL LINKS ... PRE BOOK YOUR STORAGE !

River cruise

The best and quickest way to see the city is with a river cruise. With bottomless Heineken and a walk through the history of the city, the river cruise will teach you all there is to know. Starting with the infamous '7 dancing houses' built 400 years ago, you'll spot quirky river restaurants for a bite to eat, discover the reality of life on the river and indulge in the significant past of Hollands capital city. By booking in advance of your trip, you can save a few euro too, and with the prices of Amsterdam in mind, it is truly worth the savings!

Food on the go...

With an undeniably indulgent reputation, there's no better time to try Hollands best street food 'patat'(chips).

The perfect opportunity to take a closer look at Amsterdam's shopping high street, local cafes and unique boutiques presents itself as you head back to Central Station to collect your baggage. Once you're ready, head towards your accommodation to check-in, freshen up and prepare yourself for an unimaginable evening in Amsterdam central.

Adam Lookout

For an unmatched view of the city, the swings located at the top of Adam Lookout offer a unique experience. Lasting around 3/4 minutes...though it feels more like 2o, the swings give the chance to experience Amsterdam from new heights and truly take in all it has to offer. For the best view, I recommend timing your booking with sunset to watch the city glow as the sun sinks beyond the canals and become part of the evening sky as people watch from below.

After a long day of discovering the city, there are endless options to fill your evening. From rows of restaurants and bars, to dessert shops, coffee shops and of course a walk through the red light district for an alternative experience.

Rembrandt Square provides the perfect European feel if you're looking for dinner and a drink slightly outside of the hustling central streets. Providing blankets, heaters and music, the square is lined with a variety of options for a vibrant evening out.

The next day...

Even though you may be feeling it, don't waste your morning with a lay in! Make the most of the dining options with a coffee and a bite for breakfast before heading over to Amsterdams museum district. Home to the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk museum, the museum district offers a unique day of art, history and culture.

For a lighthearted journey, the Moco museum exhibits modern and contemporary art, with a range of pieces from Banksy, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and many more.

If you're looking for an immersive experience why not head over to AMAZE. Offering a sensory journey to unite innovation and imagination, you will follow a path through an array of optical illusions and interactive activities like no where else. Their state-of-the-art technology creates an unforgettable pathway that leads you back to their in-house bar, perfect to finish the experience.

To end your trip on a chaotic note, the red light bar is one to visit, but if you're on the first flight back then St James Gate Irish pub might be ideal!
